What Is Myopia Control?

Myopia, commonly known as nearsightedness, is a common eye condition where people can see close objects clearly, but distance vision is blurry. When the eye isn’t shaped just right, it focuses light incorrectly, causing this “refractive vision error.” Though eyeglasses can be used to correct vision in the short term, myopia will continue to progress without proper management.

Myopia control is designed to not only correct nearsightedness, but also prevent myopia from getting worse. At Vision Specialists, we target myopia early on, ideally between the ages of 8 and 12, with several treatment options available to fit different patients.

Why Choose Myopia Management at Vision Specialists?

Myopia management is a crucial tool to prevent nearsightedness from getting out of hand. It can reduce, or potentially even eliminate, the need for corrective eyewear, helping to create a foundation for a lifetime of crisper, clearer vision. Managing the problem now can eliminate potential eye health and vision complications in the future.

Our team loves working with children, and we take the time to make sure your child is comfortable with their solution and really understands what they need to do to take care of their eyes. We care about your child’s health above all else, and only use the safest, proven technology to treat their myopia.

Myopia Control Treatment Options

During a consultation for myopia control, we used advanced topography technology to accurately determine the best course of action to help treat your child’s myopia. Depending on the patient’s needs, we often recommend either Euclid Emerald Ortho-K Overnight Lenses, MiSight® Daytime Soft Lenses, or a combination of multifocal lenses and atropine eye drops.

Euclid Emerald Ortho-K Overnight Lenses

Orthokeratology (Ortho-K) lenses are worn overnight to gently reshape the cornea while your child sleeps. This keeps their vision clear the next day, meaning they rely less on eyewear. Ortho-K is a great choice for those with stronger myopia or who don’t want to worry about eyewear throughout the day.

MiSightÂŽ Daytime Soft Lenses

Another popular option is MiSightÂŽ soft lenses, daily disposable lenses worn during the day. For low levels of myopia, sensitive eyes, or children who would have an easier time with disposable lenses than cleaning and keeping track of reusable Ortho-K lenses, MiSightÂŽ may be the preferred option.

Multifocals & Atropine Drops

While we most often recommend the lenses above, some patients are best off using multifocal lenses with atropine eye drops. The combination of these two treatments has been shown to reduce eye strain and prevent myopia progression. Your doctor can help determine which treatment is best for your child.
